On Monday 9 September we're having a talk by Emma and Christy from the West Suffolk Hospital's Speech and Language Therapy Team. This will be at The Stevenson Centre, starts at 10:00 and should last about an hour. This is free of charge and all are welcome.
We're still planning to go on our trip on the Mississippi Paddle Boat at Horning in Norfolk on Friday 27 September. If you're interested then this will cost £25 per person, including the boat ticket and a two course lunch beforehand at The New Inn in Horning. This will be a long day, with us leaving at 10:00 from the coach park near Waitrose and getting back at around 19:00. If you're interest then please contact John on 07941 391107. See www.southern-comfort.co.uk.
If you were at out tea party at the Stevenson Centre on 21st of this month then you may have seen a demonstration of a shoe horn that's particularly useful for people with Parkinsons. This little device clips onto the back of your shoe and makes the shoe much easier to put on. It's known as the "lazy shoe helper" and can be bought cheaply from Amazon and on Ebay at about £1 each.
Sudbury Independent Parkinson's Group (SIPG) seeks to enhance the lives of local people affected by Parkinson's disease (Parkinson's) in a supportive and social way. We provide entertainment, information and friendship to those who are finding the effects of Parkinson's to be a challenge, and to those who just don't want to be on their own in meeting the challenge.
We believe that stimulating brain connections for people with Parkinson's through a range of activities helps slow down the onset of the illness. Through play, exercise, dance and much more, we're able to help you manage the disease more comfortably and less embarrassingly for all.
Stimulating conversations between like-minded family members and carers helps to build a connected community where everyone can share and exchange experiences, helping lighten the load and relieve some of the stress attached to the disease.
Our Parky People meetings are designed to stimulate everyone that joins us - helping to make Parkinson's a slightly more enjoyable journey for everyone involved.
Dealing with Parkinson’s is tough for everyone associated with the disease. That’s why we encourage family members/carers to come and make connections of their own, while sufferers interact with a range of activities.
Join us on the 3rd Wednesday of every month at the Stevenson Centre, Gt. Cornard at 1:45 for a 2pm start, OR at our Working Age / Young Onset informal socials at the Maldon Gray pub on the first Thursday of every month - 7pm
Every meeting we have is structured to stimulate brain activity. Please see below for what we are now planning i.e. to introduce games and puzzles and associated activities at our afternoon meetings. We are currently planning when and how to introduce games / puzzles sessions alongside our already established and planned future regular and occasional afternoon meeting activities.
Keeping mobile has a key role to play in slowing down the onset of Parkinson’s.
That’s why we have a range of mobility activities throughout the year, from dance classes to yoga.
We also have live music from local musician Ben Smith, all of which is designed to stimulate the brain, while keeping active. Our recent 'Alexander Technique' courses successfully concluded in March 2024.
We have recently finished our Alexander Technique course for the first part of 2024 and may run another course later in the year according to demand. See separate section on this website for details.
If you want to register your interest in the NEXT full course OR your first REFRESHER session - please Email: info@parkinsonsudbury.org.uk or Tel: 07941 391 107 (if we can't answer immediately please leave your full name and number, we will get back to you).
Based on our Members' feedback we are going to include periodic news and information about Parkinson's and related science and technology topics. Please also see the PUBLICATIONS section on this website.
We tried this out at the MARCH '23 MEETING - with interesting feedback - because so many of you now use Social Media and / or have other internet communication available to you, whereby you can find out so much for yourselves - BUT - we also recognise not ALL of you have such 'connectivity' - So we are now looking at how best to appraise ALL of our members of key Parkinson's related 'NEWS' - so no-one misses out.
Recent Days Out have included:
